The lags were screwed into 1 2 wallboard.

There was not enough left for even a 3 8 lag bolt to grab and after a little thought i used a couple of butterfly bolts to re secure the awning.
If your internal framing consists of aluminum or steel studs instead of wood supports you may have success simply going to a larger 5 16 lag screw as you ve suggested.
Late last season i started to notice that the front lower awning support bracket was loose.
So the bracket that holds the awning to the rv got pulled off at the bottom and the lower 2 screws stripped out of the side of the rv.
I tightened it a few times but it continued to work it s way to the point where the bolts eventually pulled through and it came completely off.
