Just a guess here as i have never tried it on a compressor tank but i use evapo rust to remove rust from my tools.

It works quit well and it is reusable.
Pressurized air is not able to hold as much water.

Not a whole lot but it the color that worries me.
As the pressure increases water vapor condenses back into a liquid.
I keep a bucket in the garage that i drop rusty.
You would need to fill the tank and leave it over night then rinse it out and dry it.
An air compressor works by squeezing air into a smaller volume under high pressure.
I seen a 75 years old air compressor tank rust thru pin holes around the mounting feet where it was welded.

When a compressor draws in air the air is compressed to about 12 times normal atmospheric pressure.
Not knowing the last time or how often the tank was drainind i drained it out the other day and a rust color like slude water came out.
The bottom is a bit thicker rust but the reddish stain where water sat on the bottom was pretty small so they must have drained it regularly in this florida humidity.
In general this shouldn t pose a problem but over time it can cause rust to develop inside the tank.
